DEFINITIONS
Concert Band A concert band is a band of any size performing standard concert band repertoire, and consisting primarily of brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments.
Jazz Band A jazz band is any band of any size, performing standard jazz repertoire, and consisting primarily of brass, rhythm and percussion, and woodwind instruments. Jazz band classes include classes for jazz ensembles or stage bands.
- A jazz ensemble is an ensemble of any size, with any combination of instruments, including voice or synthesised instruments.
- A stage band is any jazz band with a minimum of 10 performers. The Festival recommends the following instrumentation for stage bands: 4-5 trumpets, 4-5 trombones, 5 saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, and 1 baritone), piano and/or synthesiser keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, and optional auxiliary percussion.
Community Band Any band that is not a school band, as defined below, is a community band. For instance, a band from a post-secondary educational institution, such as a college (including CEGEP) or university, is a community band, as is a band representing an entire school board.
School Band Any band whose performers are all drawn from the same elementary, intermediate, or secondary school is a school band. The school may be a public or private school.
Elementary School Classes A school band is eligible for elementary school classes if at least nine-tenths of its performers are from grade 8 or below (Ontario) or from école primaire (Québec).
Intermediate School Classes A school band is eligible for both elementary school and secondary school classes if either of the following are true:

- The school is a mixed intermediate and secondary school (grade 7 and up) in Ontario, and at least nine-tenths of the ensemble's performers are from grade 7 and 8.
- The school is an école secondaire in Québec, and at least nine-tenths of the ensemble's performers are secondary I, II, or III.

Secondary School Classes A school band is eligible for secondary school classes if at least nine-tenths of its performers are from grade 9 or above (Ontario) or from école secondaire (Québec).
RULES & REGULATIONS
Adjudication Classes in this discipline are adjudicated competitively. However, participating ensembles receive a mark and a gold, silver, or bronze standing, in lieu of a mark and placement (first, second, or third).
School Stage Bands

Organisation Classes in this category are organised based on standardised grades for band repertoire used by publishers and bands competitions.
An Open class is a class for repertoire at an advanced level of difficulty, approximately grade 4 or higher using standardised band repertoire grades.
Eligibility Stage bands from any school are permitted to enter classes in this category.
Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity and nature of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. Unless specified otherwise, general rules for repertoire selections in this section are as follows:
- Any selection must be of a level of difficulty matching or approximately matching the class's grade. A selection in an Open class must be of an advanced level of difficulty as defined above.
- Selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on.
- Up to one selection may be a “pops or pop culture” selection, written or arranged for stage band, which may be drawn from other popular genres, as well as from film, television, or video games. All other selections must be drawn from standard traditional or contemporary jazz repertoire.
- Selections must allow for one or more partially or fully improvised solo performances.
- When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a selection for its class.

School Jazz Ensembles

Organisation Classes in this category are organised based on standardised grades for band repertoire used by publishers and bands competitions.

Keyboard Part A band director or other professional may perform keyboard parts for the ensemble.
