RULES & REGULATIONS

Eligibility Any community choir may enter classes in this category. At least two-thirds of a choir's performers must satisfy a class's age requirements.

Adult Choirs A community choir may enter adult classes if at least two-thirds of its performers are aged 19 or older, and a community choir may only enter adult classes if at least one-third of its performers are aged 29 or older.

Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity and nature of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. Unless specified otherwise, general rules for repertoire selections in this section are as follows:

1. Any selection must be of a level of difficulty suiting the age and average technical proficiency of performers in the ensemble.
2. Selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on.
3. Except where otherwise specified, at least one selection must be a Canadian or First Nations selection, composed or arranged by a person who is a Canadian citizen, a member of a First Nation, Inuit, or Métis, or a person who has been resident in Canada or on First Nation, Inuit, or Métis territory for at least 5 years and who wrote or published the selection during that time. Examples include Larysa Kuzmenko, Oscar Peterson, or Murray Adaskin.
4. Up to one selection may be a “pops or pop culture” selection, which may be drawn from popular genres, Barbershop repertoire, glee-choir repertoire, or film, television, or video games. A choir specifically dedicated to this repertoire, such as a jazz choir, glee choir, Barbershop choir, and so on, may perform two such selections instead.
5. Up to one selection may be a folk song selection.
6. When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a selection for its class.

3. All selections must be sacred music selections. A sacred music selection is any concert or liturgical work that is religious or sacred in nature.
