DEFINITIONS

Fiddle Duet or Trio A fiddle duet or trio is:

• Any duet where either or both performers are playing a fiddle.
• Any trio where at least two performers are playing a fiddle.

Fiddle Ensemble A fiddle ensemble is any ensemble of four or more performers, in which at least half of the performers in the ensemble are playing a fiddle.

 

RULES & REGULATIONS

Adjudication Classes in this discipline are adjudicated competitively except where otherwise specified.

Eligibility Each category of class in this discipline specifies the eligibility of performer to enter classes within that category.

Instrumentation If a class specifies fiddle duet or trio or fiddle ensemble, the ensemble entering such a class must satisfy the definitions of fiddle duets, trios, or ensembles. Solo performers, duets, trios, and ensembles may be accompanied by collaborative pianists or fiddlers.

Scores Performers and ensembles are encouraged to submit a transcription of the melody line of their selections if no published score exists; they are not, however, required to do so. Including a chord progression is also encouraged.

Performance Procedure Unless directed otherwise in advance by the adjudicator, performers and ensembles should perform their selections without a pause or break in between. They may perform their selections in any order.

Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. If a class permits performance of more than one selection, multiple selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on. When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a repertoire selection for its class.

Difficulty Selections must be suited to the technical proficiency of the performer or performers.

Style Selections may be from any generally-recognised fiddle style, such as Cape Breton, Country, Métis, and so on.

Improvisation Performers may improvise as long as the chord progression and overall structure of the selection is preserved.
