Syllabus - Music Theatre

DEFINITIONS

Music Theatre Duet or Trio A music theatre duet or trio is any duet or trio consisting entirely of vocalists. If the duet or trio is accompanied, the accompaniment part played by a collaborative pianist.

Music Theatre Ensemble A music theatre ensemble is any ensemble of four or more performers, all of whom are vocalists. If the ensemble is accompanied, the accompaniment part must be played by a collaborative pianists.

 

RULES & REGULATIONS

Adjudication Classes in this discipline are adjudicated competitively except where otherwise specified.

Eligibility Each category of class in this discipline specifies the eligibility of performer to enter classes within that category.

Instrumentation If a class specifies music theatre duet or trio or music theatre ensemble, the ensemble entering such a class must satisfy the definitions of music theatre duets, trios, or ensembles. Ensembles in music theatre ensemble classes may be accompanied by instruments other than or in addition to piano or keyboard.

Costumes Costumes are permitted in this discipline. Costuming is not taken into account when marking unless it interferes with a performance. Time spent to change costumes counts against your time limit.

Props and Choreography A solo performer, duet, or trio may conduct limited stage movement and use up to two (2) hand props and up to one (1) theatre rehearsal box or chair. A music theatre ensemble may include more elaborate stage movement or choreography and use larger props or even set pieces such as backdrops. Setting up props counts against your time limit.

Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. If a class permits performance of more than one selection, multiple selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on. When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a repertoire selection for its class.

Difficulty Selections must be suited to the technical proficiency of the performer or performers and age-appropriate in terms of the physical demands on performers.

Content Selections must be age-appropriate in terms of content.

Accompaniment Selections may be accompanied or unaccompanied.

Permitted Competitive Selections Selections in competitive classes may be drawn from staged, un-staged, or workshopped music theatre productions, including staged adaptations of films, from stand-alone pieces written in music theatre style, from music theatre song cycles or similar collection or anthology works,, or from animated or live-action film musicals. Selections in competitive classes may not include primarily spoken word or "patter" songs.

Permitted Non-Competitive Selections Selections permitted in competitive classes are also permitted in non-competitive classes. Selections in non-competitive classes may also include primarily spoken word or "patter" songs.

Prohibited Selections Popular music selections, such as those found in staged adaptations of "commercial" pop music - for instance, "jukebox" musicals such as Mamma Mia!, and operetta selections are not permitted in any class in this discipline.
