DEFINITIONS
Symphony Orchestra A symphony orchestra is any orchestra of any size consisting of the standard range of orchestra instruments: brass, strings, woodwinds, and percussion, along with supplemental instrumentation – harp, piano, and so on.
String Orchestra A string orchestra is any orchestra of any size consisting solely of string instruments.
Community Orchestra Any orchestra that is not a school orchestra, as defined in the rules for school orchestras, is a community orchestra. For instance, an orchestra from a post-secondary educational institution, such as a college (including CEGEP) or university, is a community orchestra, as is an orchestra representing an entire school board.

Adjudication Classes in this discipline are adjudicated competitively. However, participating ensembles receive a mark and a gold, silver, or bronze standing, in lieu of a mark and placement (first, second, or third).
Community Symphony Orchestras

Eligibility Any community symphony orchestra may enter classes in this category.
- At least two-thirds of the performers must satisfy the maximum age requirement of the class, if there is one.
- An orchestra may enter an adult class if at least one-third of its performers are age 19 or older, and an orchestra must enter an adult class if at least one-third of its performers are age 29 or older.
Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity and nature of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. Unless specified otherwise, general rules for repertoire selections in this section are as follows:
- Any selection must be of a level of difficulty matching or approximately matching the technical proficiency of the performers.
- Selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on.
- Up to one selection may be a “pops or pop culture” selection, written or arranged for symphony orchestra, which may be drawn from popular genres, as well as from film, television, or video games. All other selections must be drawn from the standard orchestral repertoire.
- Passages for soloists must not exceed 10% of a selection's duration by measure count except where specified otherwise.
- When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a selection for its class.
Multi-Movement Works You may combine one or more movements of a multi-movement work together in a selection. When not performing the entire work, multiple movements must be contrasting. You may not split up movements of the same multi-movement work into multiple repertoire selections for your class.
