Syllabus - Percussion

DEFINITIONS

Percussion Instrument There is such a variety of percussion instruments that the Festival does not list specific instruments. Instead, when in doubt, an instrument qualifies as a percussion instrument at the adjudicator's sole discretion.

Percussion Duet or Trio A percussion duet or trio is:

  • Any duet where either or both performers are playing a percussion instrument.
  • Any trio where at least two performers are playing a percussion instrument.

Percssion Ensemble A percussion ensemble is any ensemble of four or more performers, in which at least half of the performers in the ensemble are playing a percussion instrument.

Instrument Categories Certain classes in this discipline require that one or more repertoire selections be performed using certain categories or kinds of percussion instrument. The categories used by these classes are:

  • Keyboard Percussion Instruments such as glockenspiel, marimba, or xylophone, and so on.
  • Drums Instruments such as bass drum, hand drums, snare drums, or timpani, and so on.
  • Multi-Percussion Not a category of instrument, as such, but a keyword indicating the selection must include the performance of two or more different percussion instruments.

As long as these requirements are met, performers may otherwise use any instrument to perform any selection.

RULES & REGULATIONS

Adjudication Classes in this discipline are adjudicated competitively except where otherwise specified.

Eligibility Each category of class in this discipline specifies the eligibility of performer to enter classes within that category.

Instrumentation A performer of any percussion instrument may enter classes in this discipline. Select classes may require that some repertoire selections be performed using instruments from specific categories as defined above. If a class specifies percussion duet or trio or percussion ensemble, the ensemble entering such a class must satisfy the definitions of percussion duets, trios, or ensembles.

Repertoire Each class specifies the quantity of repertoire selections required for that class in its description. If a class permits performance of more than one selection, multiple selections must be contrasting - distinct from one another in style, mood, tempo, and so on. Selections may be accompanied or unaccopmanied. When in doubt, the adjudicator determines the suitability of a repertoire selection for its class.

Difficulty Selections must be suited to the technical proficiency of the performer or performers unless otherwise specified.

Multi-Movement Works When performing two or more movements from a multi-movement work, you combine such movements into a single selection, and may not perform them as distinct selections. These movements must be contrasting where possible. When performing multiple movements from a multi-movement work in a class, unless otherwise specified, you may combine two movements whose combined duration is no more than five (5) minutes.
